Congratulations Mayor Elect Antonio Villaraigosa!

ExpoUpdate would like to congratulate Mayor Elect Antonio Villaraigosa on his landslide win for mayor of Los Angeles.  "Mayor V," as we heard someone on Front Page call him, has shown up and has spread his good "natured-ness" liberally around our community. We here at the Expo have long partnered with the Latino business community and hope to continue in that vein.  Please join us in congratulating and supporting the mayor.  After our own struggles and activism in which we were successful in witnessing four terms of an African American mayor while our numbers were relatively small, it only seems right to congratulate our Latino counterparts for enjoying the same achievement.  As business owners, we need to continue to market to the Latino and other consumers if we care to grow. Si, se puede!

Why is it so important what King Tut looked like?

by Isidra Person-Lynn

The King Tut Exhibition is due to open June 16, 2005. The ethnicity of the Boy King is being hotly contested.  What is the big deal?   Why are scientists trying to reconstruct his image?  The Negroid image on the left was reconstructed about 2002. (Click it for more)  The image on the right was recently released by a team of scientists, who assert that King Tut was Caucasoid North African.

We interviewed Atty. LeGrand Clegg to see what exactly is the fuss, and what is an Caucasoid North African.  Please click "Play" arrow to hear the 12 minute phone interview.

Still Lovin’ It?

Photo and story by: Stan Thomas

Have you heard about McDonald’s’ new ad campaign? EUR ran an article about the ‘McShout-outs’ floating across America’s airwaves. Apparently Mickey D's will pay between $1 and $5 to the artist each time his or her song is played on the air. The song must mention the Big Mac sandwich somewhere in it. Does this apply to comic strips, too? Aaron McGruder hopes so. His strip The Boondocks took a shot at it.

Giving shout-outs in song for products like Hennessey's and the Cadillac Escalade are nothing new  Click to continue

Why the Little Girl Was Handcuffed

by Steven Ivory, EURWEB.com

Ja'eisha Scott (Akins) got off easy that day.

Had the five year old  been my kindergarten classmate at Oklahoma City's Carter G. Woodson Elementary,  her tantrum would not have made it to the Principal's office, let alone police or handcuffs.

Miss Garner would have dealt with the situation quickly and decisively.  If a spanking was involved,  Ja'eisha would have sobbed at her seat for a few minutes, mostly out of embarrassment, and rejoined us at the Play-Doh table.  Click to read entire story

Summer Black History Class for Teens

Summer Class Presents Black History 4 Young People

Beginning June 18, 2005, a six week Black History Class will be offered to young people, ages 12 - 16 years at View Park Preparatory High School, 3855 West Slauson, in Los Angeles.  Open to the public, the lively two hour class will be held on Saturday mornings from 10:00am to Noon.  Parent orientation will be held June 15 at 7:00pm, also at View Park Prep. The instructor is Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn, a professor at Loyola Marymount University, author and historian.

"Every time I teach my adult class "Afrikan World Civilizations" in the community, participants
ask if I will teach their young people.  For years, my students went away thinking that if the young people in their lives could know this information, maybe it would eliminate some of the violence so I made time to develop a course I know young people will lean on the rest of their lives," said Dr. Person-Lynnn.

The class will cover the Nile Valley, and the Afrikan origin of civilization, science, mathematics, medicine, engineering, technology, philosophy, writing and a host other disciplines Black people have created around the world. It will cover the Afrikan birth of humanity and look at the origin of colorism, intra-color prejudice, and how it is practiced today. The class will also look at the beginning of racism through the experience of the murder of 14 year old Emmet Till, and how what happened to a person of their age group effected generations of  American society,” said Dr. Person-Lynn.

Since rap/hip hop is the music of young people today, the origin and history of its development will also be investigated. The final session of the class will plant the seed of becoming financially independent through starting a business, investing and other tools towards becoming financially secure. It will be stressed that one does not go to school to get a job, but to create a job.

Conclusion of this class will give the students a sense of self-identity, and self-respect. They will learn that their ancestral family tree consisted of the founders of the civilization we presently enjoy, including the concept of education and the university system.

“We cannot continue to allow our children to be taught such myths as the ancient Egyptians were white or Columbus discovered America and other historical distortions,” said Dr. Person-Lynn. “Most of the material presented in the class is rarely, if ever, presented in the present educational system, from high school to the university. The class will give the young students a head start in being exposed to a history and culture often ostracized in western civilization.”
