Congratulations Mayor Elect Antonio Villaraigosa!

ExpoUpdate would like to congratulate Mayor Elect Antonio Villaraigosa on his landslide win for mayor of Los Angeles.  "Mayor V," as we heard someone on Front Page call him, has shown up and has spread his good "natured-ness" liberally around our community. We here at the Expo have long partnered with the Latino business community and hope to continue in that vein.  Please join us in congratulating and supporting the mayor.  After our own struggles and activism in which we were successful in witnessing four terms of an African American mayor while our numbers were relatively small, it only seems right to congratulate our Latino counterparts for enjoying the same achievement.  As business owners, we need to continue to market to the Latino and other consumers if we care to grow. Si, se puede!

Le Teranga African Restaurant:

A Gourmet Taste of Africa on Crenshaw

Right there on Crenshaw Boulevard...not to be confused with Amanze African Suya is Le Teranga.  An old friend, Jo Keita,  turned me on to him.  He is from Sengal, lived in Gabon and other places and has the best tasting food you ever did eat.  Yassa Chicken is my favorite...if you see a pepper on the plate do NOT think it is a sweet pepper and pop it into your mouth as you will run around the room crying.  Owned by: CHEF IBRAHIMA SARR, AWARD WINNING CHEF

SIZZLING SUMMER STYLE

by Mikel Kilgour

Memorial Day has passed and once again, the heat is
on... for the next twelve weeks, summer fashion will be
flaunted for better and unfortunately, for worse. In an effort to
dispel the latter, let's take a look at some of the season's
hottest trends while not forgetting the reliable power
of classic style (not to be confused with "dated"). Click to Read More

Vicente Fox’s Remarks Gets The Fur Flying

Story by: Stan Thomas

Texas Summit photo from Atlantalatino.com

June 3, 2005

Mexico's president Vicente Fox really got the fur flying over remarks he made during a speech to Texas businessmen Friday May 13th. Here's what Fox said, as quoted by the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel : "There's no doubt that Mexican men and women full of dignity, will power and a capacity for work are doing the work that not even blacks want to do in the United States."

Those remarks have generated a barrage of comments from people of all colors; black, white, and brown. Jesse Jackson has flown down to Mexico to meet with Fox. Black Enterprise's Earl Graves is asking Black Americans to boycott Mexico by not traveling to Mexico. Numerous blogs have offer very interesting views. Aaron McGruder’s comic strip The Boondocks went Fox hunting.

As entrepreneurs and consumers, and most importantly, Black Americans, this issue hits close to home. We want to hear your views on this. Speak out here in the Expo Forum.

Lou Gossett Plans Summer of Peace

Torre Reese, Director of the L.A. Bridges Program and Community Organizer of the Malcolm X Festival got a call one day from Lou Gossett who found him on the Internet.  He said he wanted to help Torre do something to stem the tide of violence in our streets and on our campuses.  The result was Gossett coming to Leimert Park to announce the Summer of Peace  You will hear more about the program as the concept develops.

Here Mr. Gossett is pictured with Donzella Lee, Interim Executive Director of T.H.E. Clinic, Inc. If you would like to see more of the event photos, click here.  Photos and slide show by Isidra Person-Lynn.

Summer Black History Class for Teens

Summer Class Presents Black History 4 Young People

Beginning June 18, 2005, a six week Black History Class will be offered to young people, ages 12 - 16 years at View Park Preparatory High School, 3855 West Slauson, in Los Angeles.  Open to the public, the lively two hour class will be held on Saturday mornings from 10:00am to Noon.  Parent orientation will be held June 15 at 7:00pm, also at View Park Prep. The instructor is Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn, a professor at Loyola Marymount University, author and historian.

"Every time I teach my adult class "Afrikan World Civilizations" in the community, participants
ask if I will teach their young people.  For years, my students went away thinking that if the young people in their lives could know this information, maybe it would eliminate some of the violence so I made time to develop a course I know young people will lean on the rest of their lives," said Dr. Person-Lynn. For more visit www.drkwaku.com.
