Emma
Pullen Bids Farewell
How sad were we at the
Expo office when we received the
devastating news that Emma E. Pullen had
passed. Emma has written for
WATTSHealth back in the day, worked
closely with Harold Hambrick, and helped
write books on various projects.
Then she came to work with Isidra
Person-Lynn as a writer for the Expo.
As recent as last year she cranked out
the special Resource Guide we published
with Wave Newspapers. What was
phenomenal is that Emma was a filmmaker,
producer, director and a story teller as
well as a writer. And she was un
charge of the Africa Marketplace at the
same time she was doing all this writing
for the Expo! The woman could crank them
out and we will certainly miss her this
year.
Her services were
held in her native North Carolina
recently. August 13, the William
Grant Still Art Center director Joyce
Maddox said they are planning something
for her. If interested, please
send an email to
isidra@prperson.com and we will send
your emails with the particulars as soon
as we get them. Thank you!

Welcome 2005
Sponsors!by Harold
Hambrick
Over the years, our sponsors have become a more integral
part of what we do at the Los Angeles Black Business Expo. They do more
than just share their dollars, which we need to meet the rising costs of
staging such an enormous event. They also contribute creative ideas,
incorporate us into their ad campaigns, and donate sweat equity to
ensure this program goes well. We thank them.
At this point, we are pleased to announce the following sponsors that
have joined us to host the 2005 Los Angeles Black Business Expo.
Presenting Sponsor: OneUnited Bank
Premier: Farmers and City of L.A.
Health Pavilion Sponsor: Pacific Care
Money Management: Comerica
Tastin’ Black Culture Food Court: Lawry’s
Foods
Theme Sponsor: Wells Fargo
Black Business Institute (Seminars) Black
Enterprise Magazine
Corporate Sponsor: Cormier Chevrolet
These founding sponsors are appreciated because
it is their dollars that help us do all the early work of
planning the expo. On behalf of the Expo team and the
hundreds of participating Black Businesses, we thank you!

Editor's Prerogative
Expo 2005 Campaign
by Isidra
Person-Lynn
Introducing the 2005 Expo Media Campaign.
I love it when a plan comes together. Each year we
start wondering, what will be the campaign we use this year?
Harold Hambrick, Expo president, suggested we do
something on women in business. Rene Cross Washington,
graphic designer, Leroy Hamilton, photographer and I had
a brain storming session, and we came up with three businesses.
Leroy said "Why don't we call it "The New Face of Women in
Business", since every time someone comes up with business women
to honor they were always honoring the same old faces. After a
rather long list, we came up with three that would represent
that theme well:
1). Of course, we start with Wendy Raquel Robinson,
our celebrity spokesperson who does her job so well. A
business owner, she has served thousands of children with her
Amazing Grace Conservatory. These children learn the
art of song, dance and dramatic acting and put on professional
level plays each year at the Los Angeles Theater Centre.
2). Then we thought of Desiree Edwards, owner of
Watts Coffee House. Desi is one who's business was
born at the Expo, with a vision from Harold brought to fruition
by Desi's hard work. And if it was born at the Expo it
grew out of her having to serve Steve Harvey the year he
broadcast his morning show live from the Expo and Desi
provided the crew food. She's been with him ever since and
even served food to the crew on Steve Harvey's Big time TV show.
She's the only woman I know who can feed 500 folks off of $20,
and do it with a smile and a warm hug.
3). To round it out, we wanted someone with a store who had
foot traffic, someone who sold widgets that we could see if her
business would be increased by our campaign. The hot new
store Arrivals sprang to mind, suggested by Rene who is
in home decorating mode. Arrivals is the talk of the town
with its beautiful pieces that make a house feel like a home.
Gail Hawkins happened to be a client of Gail Parker
who produced our Expo CD Rom, so she made the hook up for
us. All three said they were willing to do it, and were
available on Wednesday, June 29. Rene opened up her
gorgeous home to us and what should have been a working photo
shoot wound up being a warm, loving connection of like minds.
Myra Wallace, our West Coast Fashion Summit Producer
came and brought one of the dresses we would use from
Deanzign (Angela and Jonathan Dean). Our
billboard kids from last year Erin and Evan Washington
were home for the day, and they were very helpful. And our
newest face, Sherea Vejauan was on hand interviewing and
snapping background pics. Sure, all three busy business models
were glued to their cell phones, still running thangs back at
the shop. But once the stage was set, they did the dang
thing and we can't wait to roll out the latest designs.
For right now, though, this is a photo of all the players, and
we thank them all for helping us put together a campaign that
will carry the word that the 2005 Los Angeles Black Business
Expo is back and will be bigger than ever October 28-30, 2005.
Look for it on ads, TV commercials, billboards and posters
around town. Join us!

The much anticipated Fashion Event is in

Angeles Black Business Expo and Trade Show. For more information,
