He looked quite dapper in his Ahneva

hand crafted umbrella. The affair was a festive, packed house which

New Orleans' first and
best-known African-American Carnival organization, formally known as the
Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club. The club was founded in 1909 by
African-Americans excluded from the city's mainline Carnival krewes,
which were often lampooned in Zulu's satirical antics. Zulu began to
parade in 1916, featuring characters such as King Zulu, Big Shot and the
Witch Doctor who are city
favorites to
this day. While Rex rules Carnival with a golden scepter
and jeweled crown, King Zulu carries a banana stalk and
wears a lard can on his head. And did we mention that
all of the krewe's maskers - now including men and women
of all races - wear black face and Afro wigs to turn the
tables on racial stereotypes? The prize of the Zulu
parade is a painted coconut; they used to be thrown from
the floats but are now handed out because of high
liability insurance costs due to the risk of injury to
spectators.

Here We Go Again:
COMMUNITY ROCKED BY THE LAPD KILLING OF DEVIN BROWN
Here at Expo Update, we are concerned about businesses for, by and about
African Americans. And we are very concerned about issues which
could harm those businesses. It was not very long ago when the
streets of L.A. erupted in the flames of anger and frustration about
Latasha Harlins and Rodney King. Many of our businesses bore the
"black-owned" signs, but that did not stop too many of our livelihoods
from going up in flames. Once the fire starts it is very hard to
contain it. It seems we are again entering those times-- King/Drew
Hospital threatened with closure, million dollar awards for
discrimination or hand slaps for officers caught on tape. We even
discovered caches of weapons right in our cultural center of Leimert
Park--made "OK" because the police buy their weapons from there.
Say what? The Feds and police agencies don't get their weapons at
their offices or stations, having deliveries made directly to them?
How many more unidentified buildings have questionable substances? It
makes you wonder since drugs and guns are so plentiful but no one seems
to know where they are coming from. Is all of this happening
because someone WANTS you to react a certain way so they can use that
stash of weapons on you? Look at war torn regions of the world.
Before their civil wars broke out they were living normal lives just
like us. That's how it starts, one incident at a time.
Well, many
folks are on the case and for that we are thankful. Maybe your
issue is saving King Drew. Maybe your issue is following through
on Donovan Jackson, or Three Strikes law. Or maybe you
prefer to mentor kids, or grow black businesses and hire our youth.
Maybe you work with gang members, or teenage mothers or L.A. Bridges.
Well, now you've got a new issue: the killing of 13 year old Devin
Brown by an LAPD officer. There are so many issues on many fronts
and we need all hands on deck, to keep our neighborhoods from going up
in flames again.
Thankfully, Michael Riddick's chosen task is documenting what is really
going on. Check out his photos from two days of protests, which
are necessary to relieve the pressure. If you think no one is
organizing, think again. Look at the photos. You will see Minister Tony
Muhammad (NOI), Khallid Shaw (Stop the Violence...), the Pathways to Our
Future Crew, actress Jo Marie Payton, and the rest who may be unnamed,
but they are hurting in unison.

Wednesday
morning January 26th, as I left my home, I turned on
the news. The very first words I heard were about the Metrolink
crash in Atwater Village near Glendale. The report shocked me. I
had ridden Metrolink on that very same stretch of track the day
before, so I was obviously very concerned.

Whoever believes it never
rains in California either has not heard the rest of the song or
was not here last month. Record-breaking rains hit our state.
Floods, mudslides, landslides, road closures, roof collapses,
entire home collapses, and spectacular rescues dominated the
news. Had Noah come sailing by on his ark, no one would have
been surprised.

FUNERAL SCHEDULED FOR OSSIE DAVIS:
Funeral services for the late Ossie Davis, 87, have been
confirmed. There will be a visitation on Friday, Feb. 11 from 5
to 10 p.m. at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 132 W. 138th Street,
Manhattan. His funeral will be
held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Riverside Church, in
Manhattan. Both his visitation and funeral are open to the
public. For
what to do in lieu of flowers, click here.
You must have read the stories by now. If not, do a
search on Google, there are many. We would all do well to
read the history of this Mr. Davis, the one in the Los Angeles
Times was pretty extensive.
But just click the photo above--Photographer Leroy Hamilton
has captured Ossie Davis in a memorable way.
