A Message from the President

This month, we were happy to hear that our sponsor Black Enterprise Magazine has invested heavily in this year's expo by hosting two dynamic seminars on Friday which kick off this year's Black Enterprise Magazine Business Institute at the Expo. At the afternoon session the Black Enterprise Vice President, Alfred Edmond Jr. will make a standing room only presentation so we suggest planning to arrive early and staying all day!  Let's meet Mr. Edmond now:

 

ALFRED A. EDMOND, JR.

Sr. Vice President, Editor-in-Chief 

Alfred Edmond is a Senior Vice President and the Editor-in-Chief of BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine.  As a Senior Vice President, Mr. Edmond is a member of the senior management of the magazine’s parent company, Earl G. Graves Ltd. He is responsible for the long-term planning and development of the editorial content of the magazine, as well as the hiring and overall supervision of the editorial staff, consisting of staff editors, writers, contributing editors and the art and production departments.  As Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Edmond sits on the BLACK ENTERPRISE editorial board and manages the editorial budgets for the magazine. He is also responsible for setting and enforcing quality standards for editorial content extensions of BLACK ENTERPRISE, including blackenterprise.com, the Black Enterprise Business Report for radio and the Black Enterprise Report television show. 

An award-winning reporter and editor, Mr. Edmond has been recognized by TJFR Business News Reporter as one of America’s 100 Most Influential Financial Journalists. During his tenure as the chief editor of BLACK ENTERPRISE, the magazine has earned five Folio: Editorial Excellence Awards in the category of business/finance consumer magazines, a Griot Award from the New York Association of Black Journalists and more than a dozen other editorial and design awards. A nationally recognized expert on business and economic trends, Mr. Edmond has appeared regularly on such television shows as CNNfn’s MarketCall,  BET Nightly News and America’s Black Forum, and is a highly sought-after public speaker. 

Mr. Edmond joined BLACK ENTERPRISE in 1987 as an associate editor and advanced to business editor later that year.  In 1990, he was promoted to senior editor/administration and was appointed to managing editor in 1992.  He was appointed to executive editor in 1995 and assumed his current role in January 2000. Before joining BLACK ENTERPRISE, Mr. Edmond served as the senior editor of MBM/Modern Black Men Magazine (1986) and as an associate editor for the Daily Challenge (1985).  Mr. Edmond was also the managing editor of Big Red News (1983-1985), a black weekly newspaper in Brooklyn, N.Y. (now the New York Beacon). 

Mr. Edmond is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and a member of the board of the American Society of Magazine Editors. He is a lifetime member of the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ) and the Rutgers University Alumni Association; and a lifetime and founding member of the Rutgers African American Alumni Alliance. He is also a charter member of the NABJ Business Writers Task Force. He currently serves on the editorial advisory board of the Rutgers Alumni Magazine, the board of trustees of the Bridge Street Church Preparatory School in Brooklyn, N.Y, and the board of Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA).  He has also served as an adjunct professor in the journalism department at Rutgers and as an instructor for the NYABJ High School Journalism Workshop at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. In 2000, Mr. Edmond was recognized with the NYABJ’s Chapter Service Award.

 


 

A native of Long Branch, New Jersey, Mr. Edmond is a 1996 inductee into the Long Branch High School Distinguished Alumni Academic Hall of Fame.  He graduated from Rutgers College at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick in 1983 with a degree in studio art and a minor in economics.  Mr. Edmond has been a member of Brooklyn’s Bridge Street A.W.M.E. Church since 1983. A health and fitness enthusiast, Mr. Edmond pursues bodybuilding as a hobby and has competed in several shows as a member of Natural Bodybuilding Inc., a drug-free bodybuilding organization, since 1999. Married with four children, Mr. Edmond resides in New Jersey.

The Team is in Place! 

BBX Welcomes Myra Wallace as Expo Director

This year we are graced with the hardworking, dedicated talent of Myra Wallace to lead the 2005 Expo (BBX) to new heights.

Myra Wallace came to us as a fashion designer with her company MKO Man (MKO stands for My Kind of Man), and exhibited in the annual Fashion Show.  The following year, she took over the helm as the director of the West Coast Fashion Summit, which include the beauty and hair seminars, Fashion Shows and Hair Shows. 

She has planned the last six shows, and this year layers on the added responsibility of the entire Expo.

Also, new to the team is Tony Thomas as coordinator of Autoland and Doris Mosely as coordinator of the Hair Show. They join an outstanding staff.

Look for exciting contributions from them.  Welcome aboard!
