LA FESTIVAL SET FOR FEB
11 and 12 in LEIMERT PARK
The
LALA Parade has become a favorite cultural event in the month of
February…from the parade to the beignets, everybody who attends
feels as if they have a slice of Mardi Gras right in Leimert
Park.
This year’s LALA Festival, February 11 and 12th, is
especially poignant, given the severity of Hurricane Katrina
which decimated the city of its cultural heritage.
At this free
festival, expect record attendance, larger Second Line
performances, more Cajun and Creole foods and hundreds dancing
in the street. When attendees have worked up an appetite, they
can help the Festival raise much needed funds for the almost
forgotten Katrina evacuees. On Saturday, at 2 pm, members are
hosting a Gumbo Cook Off, and selling the hot steaming bowls of
gumbo for $10 a bowl. All proceeds will go to the LALA Katrina
Fund.
Entertainment includes the LALA Second-Line Dancers, Live Music,
Children’s activities. Other merchants will be offering Creole
and Cajun dishes, Crawfish, Boudin, Red Beans and Rice, Catfish,
pralines and more.
The event is
co-sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs
Department, Councilman Bernard Parks, 8th District,
Councilman Herb Wesson, 10th District, and supported
by Supervisor Yvonne Braithwaite Burke.
The parade
begins at 10 AM on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. It travels on
Crenshaw Blvd. South to Leimert Park. The Festival begins at 11
AM on Saturday. Sunday begins with a worship service at 10 AM
with the Festival beginning at Noon. For more information call
the LALA Hotline (213) 694-1499 or visit
