Kicks Off The Official MLK Celebration For The City Of
Los Angeles
At The Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall - January 7
LOS ANGELES, CA (JANUARY 4, 2005)
- The boards of directors of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles (SCLC/LA)
and the Martin Luther King Legacy Association (MLKLA)
are pleased to present KING WEEK 2005 in celebration of
the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
during the upcoming national holiday observance of his
birthday. KING WEEK 2005, a
weeklong collections of commemorative events will
commence with the Kick-Off Ceremony and Press Conference
on Friday, January 7, 2005 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw
Plaza in Los Angeles, California and culminate on
Monday, January 17, 2005 with the Birthday Dinner
Celebration at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly
Hills, California, where The Honorable Maxine Waters,
United States Congresswoman, California District 35,
will deliver the keynote address and receive the
National Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award.
Recognized as the City of Los Angeles' official Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration, KING WEEK
2005 offers a chance for the communities of Greater Los
Angeles to come together and on one accord, which is the
essence of this year's theme: "Building a Peaceful World
House."
The public, press and local/national officials are
invited to attend the Kick-Off Ceremony and Press
Conference on Friday, January 7, 2005 beginning at
10:00am at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in the Sears
Court. At this free event, attendees will also have a
chance to learn more about other events during KING
WEEK, which include the SCLC/LA Open House, Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast, LA County Federation
of Labor Breakfast and a Community Forum on the Trauma
Center at King Drew Medical Hospital.
In addition to the commemoration of Dr. King's
birthday, KING WEEK 2005 is also the primary fundraiser
for
SCLC/LA's programs - Rosa Parks
Family Counseling and Sexual Assault Center, Hate Crimes
Prevention Program, Martin Luther King Dispute
Resolution Center (MLKDRC), L.A. Bridges @ Foshay
Learning Center and Beyond the Bell. Through the
services of these programs to promote the philosophy of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and continue the unfinished
agenda for progressive change. Their goal is to realize
the dream of freedom, peace, justice and equality for
all by recognizing the inalienable dignity and worth of
every human being. The SCLC mission and mandate remain
to organize and mobilize the strength of America's moral
consciousness against the weakness of its social order.
