From Harold Hambrick, Executive Director

It's  A New Century!

We hope you have been enjoying your CD version of the L.A. Black Business Expo Directory.  With this issue of Expo Update we release part of it online.  Click to check out what we call the Sights, Sounds Soul and Heartbeat of L.A. The Directory will keep you coming back for more!  Looking for a restaurant?  A Black-owned store? A Black Media Outlet? Before you buy, check out the Directory! It's the Place to Go for Something to Do in Los Angeles/Southern California.  Before you go spend money--L.A. Black Business Expo Directory.

That dapper gentleman pictured with me at left is Jim Franklin with New Century which was a major sponsor of the recent SCLC Martin Luther King Dinner.  If you click the photo at right you will see that it is for $100,000.  New Century is being supportive of the dreams of the African American community in a big way.  We congratulate them for their work and Bauman Curry Public Relations for introducing us.

Also this week, Magic Johnson's Johnson Development Corporation partnered with our sponsor Washington Mutual to boost the home loans to southlanders.  Below we even have a brief audio interview  with Magic and Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn.

A big congratulations to Theresa Price for the work she has done with the Black College Expo.  Check below for a video clip of one of her speakers Judge Kevin Ross and news about one of her five scholarship winners, Eric Greer who won a $10,000 scholarship presented by Brenda Ross Dulan.

Read on for news about so many things that have happened and others that are still to come this African American History Month and Black Love Month, Feb 14.  There is plenty to see and do!  Enjoy it all! Click around!

Sincerely,

Harold Hambrick

NEW BUSINESS:   Curves Comes to Crenshaw!

A new franchise of Curves, the popular exercise studio, opened last Monday.  It's located at 3737 Crenshaw Blvd. in Los Angeles (Between the Pep Boys and the Rite Aid.)  Three women own it, according to employees...and it's kind of a fun workout...For thirty minutes you do 30 seconds on a machine then go to the station in between machines and dance for 30 seconds then go to the next machine and keep going around like that until you are done.  Because everyone keeps moving no one really has to wait and it seems to be a lot of fun.  Call them at (323) 295-3737.

For more information about the Curves Franchises visit: http://www.curvesinternational.com/

MATTYE'S BISTRO IS NOW OPEN!

"An Invitation from the Owner"

Thanks for all of your support. My name is Clarence Bonner, I am the owner.

Our hours are Monday thru Thursday, 7 a.m. to Midnight. Friday & Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.  Sunday 10:00 am to 11:00 p.m.  The restaurant will be open to the public on February 7th.  Starting at 7 a.m.

As you know, our community is in need of an upscale restaurant. I am proud to present the community with one.  Nearly $500,000 went into the renovations of the (old Marie Callendar/Joseph location) building.  I want our residents to think of Mattye's Bistro as the place to bring their out of town guests as well as the spot to hear great live jazz 4 days a week.

Our seating capacity is 300.  With a maximum capacity at 400.  We have 2 bars in the restaurant.  One to accommodate the restaurant guests. The other to accommodate those crazy Laker fanatics.

Our house specialty is fried ribs.  The menu has over 125 items!  The cooking staff is directed by James Jackson, former owner of "3J's" fish restaurant.  Mr. Jackson has a 30 member cooking force specializing in everything from "grits to lobster."

Ingrid Holliday, is the GM of the restaurant.  I "kidnapped" Ingrid from the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey.  Ingrid, along with her hand pick staff of 90 will make sure our guests received the greatest TLC while visiting the restaurant.

Again, look forward to seeing you.

A Neighborhood Memorial Evokes Memories of Dr. King’s Legacy

Photo and story by Stan Thomas

"It impressed me that someone had taken the time to honor Dr. King in this way. It seemed to tell the world that Martin Luther King is about more than "I Have a Dream" and a day off work. I walked up to the memorial to photograph it and pay my respects, but was unprepared for the thoughts and feelings that would soon envelop me."

MAGIC AND WAMU Team Up

for Accessible Home Loans

Last week Magic Johnson and Washington Mutual provided a big "assist" to community members by opening Home Loan Centers in Los Angeles at Vernon and Crenshaw, on Slauson and Western and in the Ladera Center.  I had a chance to sit and chat with him.  Here is a small excerpt of the interview.

10 Years Since the "Northridge" Quake

Media Memories Forget Minorities

Story and Photos by Stan Thomas

Southlanders may never forget what happened at 4:31a.m.on January 17, 1994.  That is when the Northridge Earthquake struck, registering a massive 6.8 on the Richter scale. Most of us remember exactly what we were doing at the time. It is said to be the costliest natural disaster ever to hit the US. Each of us has a story to tell about how we dealt with the disaster.   Click to continue.

Exclusive Interview from the desk of:
Kawanna Brown - President of The Magic Johnson Foundation

This week, I had the extreme pleasure of sitting down with a very dynamic presence in Los Angeles who is in fact ,The President of Magic Johnson Enterprises. She is truly a woman representing the new millennium in all its diversity and one that masterminds all the Enterprise's

She is Kawanna Brown and this time, its all about the upcoming fashion extravaganza being hosted at the legendary Peterson Automobile Museum.
The show is entitled "THE MAGIC OF FASHION" and indeed, there will be
illusions and grandeur galore as seen through the eyes of long time producer,
Paula Bond and Robert Hansen, the set designer. The featured designers were
